Subdivision Surface modeling lends itself especially well to construction of organic shapes such as humans, animals and fanciful creatures. Most creatures and even many humans in modern movies are designed using Sub-D technology. One one of the popular 3-D model sites, Turbosquid, there are over 3000 models under the "People" category, over 5000 in the "Animals" category and over 500 in the "Creatures" category. SubD-NURBS does an excellent job of reverse engineering creature meshes. You can see below that we are able to read these models into NURBS based systems such as Rhino and Inventor. You can see the quality of the surfaces which are mostly G2 continuity in some of the images which have both a Sub-D and NURBS. We show the surface breakdown for a couple of the models to give you an idea what the resulting boundary representation would look like.

Here are some of the creatures that have been processed with SubD-NURBS. Note that some of the creatures had patches of triangles. As you can see from some of the complexity of the shapes, reverse engineering creatures can be a very challenging task. In fact most of these shapes would be exceptionally difficult if not time prohibitive to design with any kind of NURBS modeling system.
